Speaking & Listening Weeks 1 & 2

Week 1 - Aug. 29 & 31 Our first day of Speaking and Listening was a bit chaotic. Teacher Solveiga (Intermediate High) was sick, so her students came to our classroom until the substitute teacher arrived. So we did an icebreaker activity in teams, so students could get to know each other. Once the Intermediate High students left, students watched two different San Francisco videos: one about Portsmouth Square , and the other about the Golden Gate Bridge . Students used a structured note to help them remember important facts about the two places. On Thursday, I introduced the class to discussion questions, which each S & L class will start with. Students choose a set of 10 questions on a variety of topics, and should find a partner and have a conversation built around the questions. This day the topics were travel and weather. Reading and Writing * Weeks 1 & 2: August 28 - September 6

On Monday, our first day of class, we started off with introductions, student expectations and class expectations. Meghan came to do computers, so she helped students get set up with gmail accounts and asked them to write a short paragraph or two about students' families, and share them with us. On Wednesday,  we talked about the narrative essay and students read two examples of narrative essays. The main characteristics of the narrative essay include: Setting Characters Plot Narrator Problem/Conflict/Climax Before the end of class, students began their reflective journals. I asked them to list two to three things they learned the first week of class, along with some topics or themes they'd like to discuss. I plan to respond and we'll keep the dialogue going. Week 2 - Sept. 6 Due to the Labor Day holiday, we had a short week, but we continued with the narrative essay.
